Sound healing
Singing bowls and gong, usually in a group, usually at the end of the day.
Bali retreats
Sound healing, chakra balancing and reiki, held in places built for stillness rather than for photographs.
A healing retreat in Bali is energy work and bodywork on a daily rhythm, aimed at restoring balance between body, mind and spirit rather than at fixing anything in particular.
What it involves
Three things most healing programmes have in common, whatever the retreat calls itself.
Singing bowls and gong, usually in a group, usually at the end of the day.
Balinese massage and energy work, one to one, most days.
Unstructured time. The part that does most of the work, and the part most schedules squeeze out.
Healing here is not treatment. Nobody on a retreat is diagnosing you, and any programme that suggests otherwise is one to walk away from.
What it is: a week of practice, rest and attention, in a setting that makes both easier than they are at home.
