How to Choose a Retreat

How to tell a real retreat from a well-photographed claim, in about ten minutes of checking.

In short

Judge a retreat on its reputation, its reviews and the verifiable credentials of its facilitators — and treat vague or grandiose healing claims as the warning they are.

  • Named facilitators with checkable training
  • Specific claims, not transformational language
  • Written inclusions and a stated cancellation policy

What it involves

Three checks

Any retreat worth your money passes all three inside a day.

Who runs it

Names, training, and how long they have practised. Vagueness here is the whole answer.

What is written

Inclusions, cancellation terms and health screening, in writing before payment.

What is claimed

Specific and modest beats transformational. Cures are not on offer anywhere.

The legal line

Indonesia's drug laws are strict and classic psychedelics are classified as narcotics. Reputable retreats do not advertise them, and a retreat hinting at them is telling you how it operates.

Everything legitimate on this island is legal: yoga, meditation, breathwork, sound and Balinese ritual.
