In short

A yoga retreat in Bali is a daily practice with somewhere quiet to put it — usually twice a day, usually outdoors, and usually in Ubud, where the island's teaching is concentrated.

  • Morning and late-afternoon practice
  • All levels, from first class to teacher training
  • Ubud has the deepest concentration

What it involves

A yoga day

The shape most yoga retreats settle into, whatever the style on the timetable.

Morning practice

Usually before breakfast, usually the longer of the two sessions.

Food

Nutritious and mostly plant-based, included in almost every package.

Evening practice

Restorative or yin, timed to end around sunset.

Choosing a style

Bali teaches most lineages, and a retreat rarely says which one suits a beginner. Vinyasa and hatha are the safest first weeks; ashtanga and teacher training are not.
